Students are required to write 1000 words that tells the story of the pieces of evidence
selected. For each data set example (1 x quantitative; 1 x quantitative) students are to write 500
words that explain:
Where the data were generated (the original research and in what tutorial or workshop the
student accessed/generated the data)
Why the student has selected the particular piece of evidence to interpret (e.g. links to current
debates, relevance to future career, success/enjoyment of task)
How they have interpreted the data and what meaning can be drawn from it (analysis)
What use the meaning/analysis could be put to (e.g to inform policy, identify patterns in social
phenomenon etc)
Step 3: Attach the two data sets as appendices in the same document.
The written component of the portfolio is not an essay so an introduction and conclusion are not
needed. Students may use headings to organise their response. Appendices must be correctly
formatted with headings and table/figure numbers and source statements. Within the written
component, reference to academic sources beyond the sources of data is not required. A reference
list is required for data sources. The reference list and appendices are not included in the word
count.

Liberal Party Asylum seekers Policy
Within three months of taking office, a Coalition government would reconstitute
the Productivity Commission as the Productivity and Sustainability
Commission and task it with an annual review of Australias infrastructure
needs for short, medium and long term projected population numbers.
Putting the national interest first
The Coalition will put the national interest first, deliver stronger borders,
provide a world-class defence force and protect the nations interests
overseas.
We will take immediate action to protect both the integrity of our borders and
Australias immigration programme. We will not allow illegal boat arrivals and
people smugglers to either determine Australias immigration programme, or
undermine the Australian peoples confidence in the programme.
Delivering stronger borders where the boats are stopped
We will deliver stronger borders where the boats are stopped with tough
and proven measures.
If elected Prime Minister, the first overseas trip that Tony Abbott makes as Prime
Minister will be to Indonesia to renew cooperation against people smugglers.
We will re-introduce the use of Temporary Protection Visas (TPVs) to deny the
people smugglers a product to sell.
We will immediately give new orders to the Navy to tackle illegal boat arrivals and
turn back the boats where safe to do so.
We will give priority in processing to offshore special humanitarian visa applicants,
over illegal boat arrivals.
We will ensure, offshore special humanitarian visa applicants receive priority in
obtaining permanent residency in Australia over illegal boat arrivals.
We will boost rigorous offshore processing for illegal arrivals so that bad behaviour
has consequences.
We will establish presumption against refugee status for people who arrive on
boats without identity papers.
Where asylum seekers deliberately discard their identity documentation, we will
deny them the benefit of doubt when determining their refugee status.
We will establish and increase mandatory minimum jail sentences for people
smugglers.
We will reserve 11,000 of the 13,750 refugee places each year for offshore
applicants.
We will ensure a minimum of 1,000 refugee places are reserved for the most
vulnerable refugees, in particular women at risk of violence and harm.
We will restore the single case officer appeal process.
Delivering a world-class defence force
We will rebuild our defence force by stopping Labors defence run-down and
give our defence force the first-class resources and equipment they need.
We will restore responsible defence spending to 3 per cent real growth per year
subject to improvements in the Budget our aspiration is to restore funding to
defence to the same level as it was under the last seven years of the Howard
Government
We will reinvest any responsible savings that can be found in the defence
bureaucracy in greater military capacity.
We will immediately start the process of acquiring a number of new state-of-theart
unmanned aircraft.
Within 18 months, we will publish a new defence White Paper with costed,
affordable ways to meet Australias important defence and national security
objectives.
We will ensure that Australia does not have a submarine capability gap. Within 18
months, we will make the short and medium term decisions necessary to achieve
this goal.
Fighting terrorism in Australia
We will deliver improved counter-terrorism and domestic security measures
in Australia and secure our ports and airports.
Improving foreign affairs a stronger focus on our region
We will increase the importance of foreign affairs, place a stronger focus on
our region and rebuild our diplomatic footprint with more effective
representation and better diplomacy. We will enhance Australias role and
engagement in the world developing greater international cooperation.
We will review the weighting Australia gives to its diplomatic resources including
overseas representation, with a view to refocusing foreign policy on the Asia
Pacific region.
We will rebuild relationships with our neighbours damaged by Labors
mismanagement and failed border security policies.
We will enhance US access to bases in Australia and continue to support our close
alliance with the US.
We will ensure future aid funding increases are dependent on AusAid meeting
strict performance benchmarks.
Within two years, we will establish a new two- way Colombo Plan to deepen our
knowledge and engagement with countries in our region and develop stronger
people-to-people relationships by bringing the best and the brightest talent from
our region to Australia and taking Australias best and brightest talent to countries
in our region.

Task: Content Analysis of Media documents-
In the final task of this weeks Workshop, you are required to begin to conduct a content analysis of media articles. The data you generate may be used in your Portfolio Assignment.
1) Click on the Week 12 tab on the left-hand margin
2) Under Workshop material you will see six folders containing media documents. Have a browse through each folder and note what type of documents/texts are contained in each folder and the topic/issue that they focus on.
3) You are only required to conduct a content analysis of the documents in ONE folder. Choose a folder of documents to conduct your content analysis.
4) Accompanying each folder is a Research Question. Based on the Research Question, you are to generate a coding framework for your content analysis (similar to how you developed a coding framework in the Week 7 Workshop for the Qualitative coding of you Interview Transcripts).
Please remember that when conducting QUANTITATIVE coding (Content Analysis), we are interested in COUNTING manifest and latent information. Please refer to your Lecture Notes from Week 10.
HINT: It may be useful to first make a list of themes that you think are relevant to that topic and the Research Question. From the list of themes, you can then list down some specific words that are associated with that theme. These words are the manifest information that you will be counting. The themes are the latent information (in addition to tone/tenor). You can then develop tables to document/present your Content Analysis results.
For example, if we were analysing newspaper articles reporting on terrorism our results tables may look something like this:
Table 1. Content Analysis Results of Manifest Information
Manifest Content
(words) Number of times word appears in document
Document
1 Document 2 Document 3 Document 4 TOTAL
terror
fear
attack
invade
Table 2. Content Analysis Results of Latent Information
Latent
Content
Appearance of Themes and Tone/Tenor of Documents
Document
1 Document 2 Document 3 Document 4 TOTAL
THEME
War
Diplomacy
Civilian deaths
Counter-terrorism
Terrorism in the Middle East
Terrorism in Western world
Terrorism elsewhere
TONE/TENOR
Positive
Negative
NOTE: As you begin your Content Analysis, you may find that some relevant themes or words appear that you did not originally think of. It is okay to add these to your coding framework as you go along.
5) Once you have developed your coding framework and tables, you may begin to conduct your Content Analysis.
